En Puerto Natales tomamos una excursion de un dia para conocer el parque natural Torres del Paine, que es uno de los lugares mas hermosos del sur chileno. Optamos por esta alternativa porque no teniamos tiempo para hacer los treking de varios dias, ademas de que los precios para pernoctar dentro del parque eran bastante elevados, y que con el tiempo que hacia no era muy recomendable acampar. Pero valio la pena porque eramos un pequeño grupo y tuvimos buen tiempo -en general- a lo largo del dia, asi que pudimos disfrutar de lo mejor del lugar / Von Puerto Natales aus wollten wir uns den berruehmten Naturpark Torres del Paine anschauen, einer der schoensten Orte im Sueden Chiles. Fuer mehrtaegige Wanderungen darin fehlte uns leider die Zeit. Noch dazu sind die Unterkuenfte dort alle uebertrieben teuer und zum Campen war uns das Klima etwas zu rauh. Daher entschieden wir uns fuer eine Ganztagestour, wo wir mit einer Gruppe zu verschiedenen Punkten fuhren und so auch die beeindruckende Natur und Landschaft geniessen konnten. Zwischen schneebedeckten zackigen Bergen liegen Seen, die in allen Farben glitzern, der Greygletscher und man begegnet einer reichen Tierwelt / Fromout Puerto Natales we wanted to visit the famous Nationalpark Torres del Paine. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time for the possible trekkings of several days. Moreover accomodation of any kind is very expensive and with the rough weather we didn’t feel like camping. Therefore we did a daytour, where we were driven to several points in a small group and could discover that way the impressive nature and landscape. Between snow covered peaks of mountains we saw many lakes, glittering in all colours, the Grey glaciar and a rich fauna.
Parte del recorrido incluia recalar en una de las orillas del lago Grey y avistar el glaciar del mismo nombre. Lo que no esperabamos era que hubiera un viento huracanado que parecia que nos arrastraria a todos (en la foto se puede ver sus efectos en mi ropa)! Bordeamos el lago con muchisimo esfuerzo hasta llegar a la otra punta para captar mejor todo el panorama, mientras veiamos por primera vez trozos de icebergs. Era muy bonito ver el color azul del hielo y las extrañas formas de los tempanos, que terminan arrastrados por el viento hasta la orilla donde se desvanecen lentamente / Am Greysee entlang wanderten wir bis zu einem Aussichtspunkt, von wo aus man den Greygletscher am anderen Ufer in der Ferne erblickt. Dort sahen wir zum ersten Mal Eisberge. Es ist faszinierend, wie das Eis blau leuchtet und die Eisstuecke in den bizarresten Formen ueber den See getrieben ans Ufer gespuelt werden. Der Wind pustete uns fast um. Aber hohe Windstaerken sind in den Breitengraden keine Ausnahme / Along the Greylake we walked towards a view point, from where we could see the grey glaciar on the opposite shore. There we saw icebergs the first time in our life. It is fascinating how the ice glows in blue. Pieces of ice in the most craziest shapes are blown across the lake and washed in front of us on the shore. The wind almost made us stumble. But strong winds are no exception at these latitudes.
En esta breve pelicula, aunque por el oleaje parece que estuvieramos junto al mar, estabamos en realidad en la orilla del lago Grey, que con el viento huracanado de ese dia parecia un furioso mar / In diesem Film koennt ihr miterleben, wie stark der Wind am Greysee blies. Bei den Wellen glaubt man eher an einem Meer als an einem See zu stehen / In this film you can see how strong winds were blowing at the lago grey. The waves make it look like the sea, but it is only a lake:
En primer plano esta el lago con sus tempanos, y al fondo a la derecha se asoman los Cuernos del Paine, una de las espectaculares formaciones montañosas de este parque natural / Im Vordergrund sieht man den Greysee mit seinen Eisbergen. Im Hintergrund schauen die umliegenden Bergketten aus den Wolken und recherhand sieht man schon die sogenannten zweifarbigen “Hoerner” / In the foreground you see the Greylake with its icebergs. In the background some of the surrounding mountain chains are peeping out of the clouds. On the right side you can already see the prominent so called “horns” in their two colors.
Hicimos picnic en la orilla del lago Pehoe, con esta maravillosa vista de los Cuernos justo delante de nosotros. Los Cuernos tienen la peculiaridad de que su cima esta “adornada” por una mancha negra, como si los hubieran pintado de negro, esto se debe a distintos estratos rocosos que han quedado al descubierto con el paso de los siglos / Am Ufer des Pehoe-sees picknickten wir und genossen die phaenomenale Aussicht. Die Berge mit den Hoernern lagen genau vor uns. Die Spitzen der Hoerner wirken wie schwarz angemalt, was durch verschiedene Felsablagerungen zustande kommt, die im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zum Vorschein kamen. Viele Voegel leisteten uns Gesellschaft und hofften natuerlich, auch etwas vom Picknick abzubekommen / We had a picnic on the shore of the Pehoe-Lake and savoured the incredible view. The mountains with the horns lay right in front of us. The peeks of the horns seem to have been painted in black, caused by different rock layers. Many birds kept us company of course speculating to share our picnic...
Aqui estamos mas cerca de los Cuernos. Los arbustos que conforman buena parte de la densa vegetacion parecen muy suaves, pero en realidad pinchan que no veas, sera por eso que les llaman “cojin de la suegra”? / Hier stehen wir noch naeher bei den Hoernern. Teil der ueppigen Vegetation sind Moosbueschel, die einen plueschartigen Eindruck erwecken, sich aber als sehr pieksig herausstellen. Sie werden „Schwiegermutterkissen“ genannt... / Here we stand even closer to the „horns“. Part of the dense vegetation are little moss bushes, that make a very soft impression, but actually prick a lot. They are called “cushion for the mother-in-law”...
Uno de los muchos guanacos que habitan el parque. Familias enteras de estos camelidos se cruzaron en nuestro camino / Eines der vielen Guanakos, die im Park leben. Ganze Familien sprangen an uns vorbei / One of the many Guanakos, that live in the park. Entire Guanako families sprang across our path.
Y de Puerto Natales continuamos en bus mas al sur, hasta Punta Arenas, la ciudad mas austral de Chile. La recta interminable de la carretera estaba adornada con nombres curiosos de estancias, como “Quien sabe” o “Rincon amigo” / Mit dem Bus fuhren wir weiter suedlich durch eine flache Steppenlandschaft nach Punta Arenas, Chiles suedlichste Stadt, vorbei an ausgedehnten „estancias“ mit Namen wie „Quien sabe“ (Wer weiss) oder „rincon amigo“ (das freundliche Eck) / With the bus we travelled further south through flat steppe to Punta Arenas, Chile’s southest town, past extensive „estancias“ with names like „Quien sabe“ (who knows) or „Rincon amigo“ (the friendly corner).
En Punta Arenas nos esperaba esta preciosa luz de final de la tarde, alrededor de las 11 pm! Ciertas zonas de la ciudad que estan un poco descuidadas tienen este particular encanto. Y el centro nos sorprendio con algunos palacetes y casas señoriales. Nos quedamos en un apartamento comodo y a buen precio en la casa de la Sra. Carlina, que se sentia muy orgullosa de sus clases de flamenco, y descubrimos en las paredes de un bar las ilustraciones de Alberto Montt, un joven dibujante chileno que quiere hacernos reir con una viñeta diferente cada dia, como se puede ver en su blog / Punta Arenas hat in weiten Teilen diesen leicht heruntergekommenen etwas verlassenen Charme. Das besondere Licht in der Daemmerung, im Sommer gegen elf Uhr abends, passte gut dazu. Das Zentrum der Stadt ueberraschte uns allerdings mit einigen herrschaftlichen Palaesten und vornehmen Wohnhaeusern. Wir wohnten guenstig und bequem in einem Ferienhaeuschen im bluehenden Garten von Sra Carlina, die uns begeistert von ihrem Flamencokurs erzaehlte... In einem Cafe in Punta Arenas amuesierten wir uns sehr ueber die Illustrationen von Alberto Montt, die dort die Waende schmueckten. Dort erfuhren wir von seinem blog, wo er jeden Tag eine neue witzige Zeichnung veroeffentlicht / Big parts of Punta Arenas have this slightly dilapidated run down charme. The last daylight, in summer around eleven in the evening, fits perfectly. But the centre of town surprised us with some majestic palaces and elegant historic appartment houses. We lived for a good price and very convenient in a holiday cottage in the flowery garden of Sra Carlina, who raved about her flamenco lessons... In a cafe in town we laughed a lot with the illustrations of Alberto Montt, decorating the walls. There we got to know, that he publishes every day a new one on his blog.
Queriamos visitar la isla Magdalena desde Punta Arenas, pero el mar picado no nos permitio gozar de la oportunidad de caminar entre mas de 240 000 pinguinos! Por fortuna, existia otra alternativa, ir a la pinguinera del seno Otway, a la que se puede llegar por tierra, y donde hay alrededor de 2 000 pinguinos magallanicos, que entre marzo y septiembre anidan y luego cuidan de sus crias en este apartado lugar. Se puede observar a estos simpaticos animales desde senderos trazados en la hierba y que nos separan de ellos con cuerdas, y tambien desde algunos miradores / Zur Magdalena Insel konnten wir leider an dem Tag wegen zu rauher See nicht. Dort laeuft man zwischen 240.000 Pinguinen umher! Dafuer machten wir einen Ausflug zur Pinguinkolonie am Seno Otway, wo man ueber Land hinkommt. Dort leben circa 2000 Magallan-Pinguine von September bis Maerz, waehrend die Jungen schluepfen und aufwachsen. Die restliche Zeit leben sie im Meer. Ueber abgesteckte Wege kann man sie von nah beobachten. Diese Art wird ungefaehr 50 cm gross / Unfortunately we couldn’t visit the Magdalena island on our day in Punta Arenas as the sea was too rough. On that island you can walk in the middle of 240.000 pinguins! But we made an excursion to the penguin colony at the Seno Otway instead, which you can reach by land. There live around 2000 Magallanic penguins from september to march, during which time the young penguins leave their eggs and grow up there. The rest of the time, the penguins live in the sea. Fromout roped off paths you can watch them from close. This species is around 50 cm big.
Daba gusto observar a los pinguinos, desde su graciosa manera de caminar en linea por la hierba, hasta los que asomaban su cabeza por entre la vegetacion y nos miraban ladeando la cabeza y con una enorme curiosidad. La playa y la extension de hierba detras estaban llenos de ejemplares adultos y jovenes, todos del mismo tamaño (miden cerca de 50 cm) ya que curiosamente las crias nacen casi con el tamaño de un adulto, y se diferencian en que estan cuebiertos por una pelusa gris, que luego se convertira en esa apretada capa de plumas oscuras. Era muy gracioso ver a los jovenes aprendiendo a salir del agua sin dar tumbos por la arena, mientras los adultos salian del agua perfectamente de pie, con gran elegancia / Es war total drollig, die Pinguine zu beobachten, wie sie in einer Reihe durch die Straeuche laufen, die Jungen aus ihren Kuhlen inmitten von Straeuchern blicken und ganz besonders im bunten Treiben am Strand, wie die Jungen noch lernen, aus dem Meer an Land zu gehen und mit der Welle an den Strand purzeln / It was so cute to observe the penguins, how they walk in their funny way in a line through the grasses, how the youngsters peep out of their holes inmidst of bushes and grass. The beach was very busy, where the youngsters with gray feathers lie on the sand and others going in and out of the water. We couldn’t get enough of watching how the young ones are still learning to hop on land and mostly tumble on the beach.

En el ferry que nos llevo a Tierra del Fuego nos encontramos esta caravana alemana! Los dueños nos expliacaron que su intencion era viajar en su camper durante un año por Chile y Argentina, y para eso habian tenido que navegar durante un mes entre Hamburgo y Buenos Aires... / Auf der Faehre nach Feuerland staunte ich ueber den Anblick dieses deutschen Wohnmobils! Die Inhaberin erklaerte mir, dass sie das Wohnmobil von Hamburg nach Buenos Aires verschifft haben, was einen Monat dauert. Nun reisen sie ein Jahr durch Chile und Argentinien / On the ferry to Tierra del Fuego I wondered to see a german camper! The owner explained me, that it took them one month on the boat with it from Hamburg to Buenos Aires. Now they will travel for a year through Chile and Argentina.
La escasa vegetacion de las planicies del sur compensaba su modesta envergadura con la variedad de colores que salpicaban de alegria el monotono paisaje / Riesenhafte Ausdehnungen von Weideland / Enormous extensions of grazing grounds.
