The small city Pakse in the south of Laos was our new base from where to explore the surroundings. One day we made a day excursion to the temple ruins of Wat Phu near Champasak. By boat we went down 2 hours the Mekong to the cosy little city Champasak and from there continued with a tuk tuk to the ruins, that we shared with a French Chilean couple, that already shared the boat with us. The ruins of the 6th century, although finished between the 9th and 13th century in the period of Angkor, are nestled up the holy mountain Phu Pasak and often you can still use the old steep and crumbling stone stairs. Next to some temples we saw heaps of sculptured stones, that once were part of the temple. But in one temple you could still find complete sculptures like this one. The excursion was definitely worth the effort.

The owner of our hotel Sala Champa in Pakse, a beautiful old colonial house, invited us to his birthday party, where we had a wonderful dinner and a few drinks together with his friends, experienced how they are joking all the time. Only with the Karaoke we did not manage to participate, although we already heard many times the Thai Karaoke to be found in buses and anywhere. But we took a DVD with us to practise for next time...

Dann werden sie geernet und die je zwei Kaffeebohnen in jeder Frucht herausgenommen, getrocknet und geroestet / Together with a Polish couple we toured one day with a Tuk Tuk around the Bolaven Plateau and visited a tea and – what you can see in the picture – a coffee plantation, several spectacular waterfalls, a local market and a tribal village, where the women from small on start smoking big tobacco pipes. Concerning the picture, for those who haven’t seen a coffee plantation, the green fruit turns red when ripe and after picking the fruit is opened and the two coffee grains contained inside taken out, dried and toasted.

Alles war von der Feuchtigkeit mit Moos und tropischer Vegetation ueberzogen / Behind us the impressive waterfall Tad Niang is pouring down and soaked us totally wet, as we were so near. Also all around us was covered with moss and vegetation for the big humidity created by the waterfall.
